02 Feb KHfH Advances New Affordable Housing Development in Līhuʻe

Future site of Ahukini Project
On February 2, 2026, Kauaʻi Habitat for Humanity (KHFH) announced a new collaborative affordable housing development planned for Ahukini Road in Līhuʻe, developed in partnership with Kauaʻi Housing Development Corporation (KHDC). Designed to serve kūpuna, working families, and local residents across a range of income levels, this project represents an important step forward in addressing Kauaʻi’s ongoing housing needs.
This thoughtfully planned development reflects years of coordination and a shared commitment to creating housing solutions that prioritize community needs while preserving Kauaʻi’s limited developable land for long-term benefit.
A Collaborative Approach to Housing
KHDC will serve as the lead developer for the overall project, which will create a total of 111 affordable housing units. Kauaʻi Habitat for Humanity is participating as a development partner, sharing pre-development responsibilities and selected development work to help move the project forward efficiently and in alignment with each organization’s mission.
“For many local residents, the housing outlook can feel discouraging,” said Kauaʻi Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Milani Pimental. “This partnership is about restoring hope, showing that community organizations are working together to create real pathways to safe, stable homes.”
Housing Options to Meet Diverse Community Needs
The planned development will include both rental and homeownership opportunities:
KHDC-Led Rental Housing
- 48 kūpuna rental units, supporting aging in place
- 33 multi-family rental units serving individuals and families
Kauaʻi Habitat for Humanity Homeownership Housing
- Habitat will independently develop a designated portion of the site
- Plans include 15 two-story duplex buildings, creating 30 for-sale homes
- Homes will primarily serve households earning 80% of Area Median Income (AMI) and below
- Habitat will partner with Permanently Affordable Living Hawaiʻi (PAL) to explore opportunities for local working households earning 80–120% AMI
- Habitat is exploring placing some or all homes into a community land trust to ensure long-term, permanent affordability
Building for the Future of Kauaʻi
Kauaʻi continues to face a critical shortage of both rental and for-sale housing, impacting kūpuna, multigenerational families, and working residents alike. This project responds by combining nonprofit leadership, philanthropic support, and innovative affordability tools to create housing that is both practical and sustainable.
As planning moves forward, the partners will continue pre-development work, community engagement, and coordination with County agencies. Additional details, including timelines and opportunities for public input, will be shared as they become available. As this process will take several years, families and individuals interested in homeownership may add their names to the Notification List on Kaua‘i Habitat’s Homeownership page of their website.
