Building a Future Through Service: Maggie Stryker’s AmeriCorps Story

Maggie and family – 2025 “AmeriCorps taught me how to step in, take responsibility, and work alongside others toward something bigger than myself.” Maggie Stryker

Maggie Stryker’s AmeriCorps service with Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity back in 2014 was more than a year of giving back – it was a foundation for the life and career she would go on to build.

Serving with Habitat immersed Maggie in hands-on, mission-driven work that required teamwork, adaptability, and a deep commitment to community. Through the daily realities of nonprofit service, she learned how strong communities are built—not just with tools and materials, but with trust, collaboration, and shared purpose.

Learning Through Hands-On Service

During her AmeriCorps year with Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, Maggie gained practical, real-world experience that shaped how she approaches work to this day. Service demanded clear communication, flexibility, and a willingness to step in wherever help was needed – skills that continue to serve her well.

Working alongside staff, volunteers, and community members gave Maggie a lasting appreciation for what can be accomplished when people unite around a shared mission.

A Strong Foundation for Leadership

After completing her AmeriCorps service, Maggie went on to build a successful career in recruiting and talent management, eventually serving in leadership roles for several years. The resilience, professionalism, and people-centered mindset she developed during her time with Habitat helped prepare her to navigate career growth and organizational change with confidence.

Even as her career evolved, the values she learned through Habitat for Humanity – service, adaptability, and positivity – remained central to how she leads and supports others.

A Lasting Impact

More than a decade later, Maggie’s AmeriCorps experience continues to influence how she views work, community, and leadership. The relationships she built and the lessons she learned during her service year did not end when her term concluded – they became part of her foundation.

Her story reflects what so many AmeriCorps members discover: when you serve with Habitat for Humanity, you don’t just help build homes – you build skills, connections, and a future rooted in service.
