15 Aug SPECIAL MAUI WILDFIRE UPDATE
On August 8, 2023, devastating wildfires hit three cities on the island of Maui – Kula, Kihei, and Lahaina. Among the three fires, the most devastating damage occurred in Historic Lahaina resulting in families, businesses, and communities losing everything overnight.
The disaster left thousands of residents displaced, including our sister affiliate’s (Habitat for Humanity Maui) partner families. The Lahaina wildfires wiped away all 10 homes recently built by Habitat Maui’s team, partner families, and volunteers in the Kahoma Residential Subdivision.
The destruction caused by these fires is truly heartbreaking. Kauai Habitat for Humanity – along with the Hawaii Island, Leeward Oahu, Honolulu affiliates and our Habitat for Humanity Association – stands with Habitat for Humanity Maui and is committed to supporting those affected by the disaster. Together, we will (re)build homes, communities and hope.
Right now, the best thing we can do for our friends on Maui is to raise recovery funds and awareness. As a group, the Hawaii affiliates and our Association have started a joint effort in support of Habitat for Humanity Maui. 100% of the proceeds will benefit the recovery efforts of Habitat for Humanity Maui.
