AmeriCorps Gets Things Done on Kaua`i

You may have heard us mention that we have an amazing group of AmeriCorp NCCC volunteers working with us to build homes and hope on Kaua’i. Well, that’s not all they are helping with. This wonderful group of volunteers took a break from construction for a day to share their time and skills with other nonprofits on island.

The team of nine volunteers worked on a project along side Rescue Rebuild, which is a traveling nonprofit that is on Kaua’i to help construct an outdoor cat sanctuary at the Kaua’i Humane Society. The outdoor sanctuary will provide additional space to help care for house cats, which is an ongoing challenge on island considering the large feral cat population.

To assist with this project the team was split into two groups. One group helped clear trash and set up the sanctuary spaces themselves. The other group assembled cat towers from pre-made kits to put inside the sanctuaries. These cat towers will provide a relaxing place for the cats, as well as allow access to other parts of the sanctuary. In total, the group assembled about 22 cat towers.

“My team was thrilled to spend the day doing this,” stated volunteer Alyssa Sanderson, “it was a nice change-up from our usual workday, and it was very rewarding to see another nonprofit on the island.”
