FAQs about ReStore

Frequently Asked Questions
about ReStore®

What is a Habitat ReStore®?
Habitat ReStores accept donations of new and gently-used items from individuals and businesses. ReStores sell those items to the public at prices well below retail. The proceeds are used to build Habitat homes with families in need in our community and we do it all with the help of dedicated volunteers, donors, and sponsors.

What kind of things will I find at ReStore®?
We have everything and the kitchen sink! See our SHOP page for a listing of all the items we carry on a regular basis. Remember, inventory changes quickly, so make sure that you shop often. If you miss a day, you just might miss a deal!

Is my donation to Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity ReStore® tax-deductible?
Contributions of goods are deductible for income tax purposes as allowed by law. In many cases, your donation is tax-deductible, but we recommend you consult with your tax advisor or IRS code to be certain as the deductibility is based on value. Due to IRS regulations, we are not allowed to assign value to donated items; valuation of donated goods is the privilege and responsibility of the donor. We will gladly provide you with a receipt for your donated items which indicates what type of items were received, in what condition they were received, and on what date they were received.

Do you pick up donations?
We are currently only able to schedule a few pick ups per week for large sized or bulk donations. Please call ahead to speak with us at (808) 335-6105.

Do you deliver purchased donations?
Unfortunately we are not able to deliver purchases. For large-scale purchases, we recommend that you coordinate your purchase and delivery with a moving company or truck rental company.

Who benefits from ReStore®?
Lots of people! Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity works with families island-wide toward home ownership. Customers benefit by getting quality goods at a deep discount. Donors benefit by getting a tax deduction, the knowledge that they are turning their excess stuff into affordable housing and keeping reusable items out of the landfill. Volunteers get to learn new skills and be a part of something special. Habitat wins by raising more money to serve our partner families, who are truly the reason we do all this!

What is Habitat for Humanity and what do you do?
Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that builds and renovates homes on Kaua‘i. We are part of a worldwide movement to eliminate poverty housing that began in 1976. To learn more about Habitat’s work around the world, visit Habitat for Humanity International.

How can I get involved?
Shop! Donate! Volunteer!

How can my company get involved?
For businesses, donating to the Habitat ReStore is a great way to move discontinued or excess stock, deal with gently used returns and show your customers that you care about the environment and your community. We also offer group volunteer opportunities if you want to do a little team building while doing good!

What is the money raised at Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity ReStore® used for?
The money raised through Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity ReStore® is used toward Kaua‘i Habitat’s mission of building homes, community and hope. We are very thankful for our shoppers, donors and volunteers who have helped families on Kaua‘i realize the dream of homeownership.

Why won’t you accept certain items as donations?
Though we greatly appreciate everyone who wants to donate to Kaua‘i Habitat ReStore®, we are unable to accept all items. Sometimes, the reason is related to safety concerns (such as unframed glass and mirrors, lead paint, certain chemicals, etc.) and other times it is for legal reasons (such as used mattresses, recalls, etc). Also, we have found that we just can’t sell certain items (such as couches that have rips and stains and appliances that are older than your grandmother).

When we do end up with these types of items, nobody buys them and we end up having to pay to dispose of the things we cannot recycle, repair or clean. This takes valuable time and money. You can see our donation criteria here. On the bottom of that same page we have referrals to other organizations that might be able to accept your donations. Whether or not we can accept your donation, we truly appreciate you thinking of ReStore® and supporting Habitat for Humanity’s mission in our island community.
