Helping home-buyers

Our goal at Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is to help those in need of a safe, decent and affordable house achieve the dream of homeownership. To achieve this goal it is imperative that we inform and educate not only on the need for affordable housing on island, but also on the process of attaining it. The need for affordable homes on Kaua‘i is great, and the process for applying can be intimidating, but we are here to help explain and walk those interested through the process. Please read the guest article in The Garden Island newspaper by our Executive Director, Stephen Spears, as he sheds light upon both the need and the process of obtaining a Kaua‘i Habitat home.

Habitat is all about helping home-buyers – The Garden Island

Welcome Global Village Thrivent

Our visiting Global Village Thrivent team has arrived and hit the ground running, painting newly construct homes in our ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision! Not only that, they made it into our local paper The Garden Island on their very first work day! The article highlighted not only the generous work they are doing building homes and hope while on Kaua‘i, but also their fashion sense. A few of the team members found a way to cool things down by making alterations to their work shirts. Read all about this great group by clicking here.

A Precious Gift

Here at Kaua‘i Habitat we are so fortunate to meet and interact with so many generous and giving souls. Every once in a while, one of these caring individuals, steals our hearts. Recently we had a visit in our office from Meaghan and her mother Stephanie. Meaghan raised $35.00 with her friends selling lemonade at their lemonade stand. Meaghan’s father and sisters had attended Clemson University and after she heard the story of football hero Deshaun Watson, and how he grew up in a Habitat House, Meaghan was inspired to donate her earning to Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity. If you are not familiar with the story of pro football player Deshaun Watson, who in college led the Clemson Tigers to a national championship, it’s a touching story of how his life was changed the day he moved into a Habitat home as a child. Watson is now an advocate of Habitat for Humanity and started a nice tradition of Clemson’s football team doing annual Habitat builds. While Meaghan was touched by his story, we are touched by hers. To see someone as young as Meaghan choose to put other peoples needs before her own, you just can’t help but be inspired.

A Habitat Halloween

Our ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision is more than just a subdivision; it’s a community! Thanks to the efforts of our Homeowner Engagement Coordinator, Pomaika‘i Brown, our homebuyers and their families had a safe and fun Halloween Trunk-O-Treat Block Party and Potluck! With donations of pumpkins from Dow AgroSciences and candy from Payton Plumbing and the Cruz family, our homebuyers transformed the neighborhood into a Halloween spectacular! Even with the rain, the keiki had a wonderful time and all left with a pumpkin, a smile and lots of treats.

The Best Thing

The best thing about being involved with Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is the day the keys are passed to the new homebuyers! At that moment you know their lives will change significantly. Those keys deliver pride, happiness, and a sense of stability and security that many of our new homeowners have never experienced before. It’s hard to imagine the feeling, but thanks to Robin Wong of Island Video, we now have a way to share that moment. Please enjoy this video highlighting two families in Anahola on the day that they changed more than their address.

Good-Bye Global Village Thrivent

The time has come for us to say good-bye to our wonderful Global Village Thrivent volunteer team. The team, led by Tim VanRooy, has done an amazing job building homes and hope on Kaua‘i. For the past ten days this team has worked alongside our staff and homeowners installing insulation and painting homes in Anahola and ‘Ele‘ele. Mahalo team, until we meet again.

Building Community

Our ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision is more than just a bunch of houses, it’s a community! Thanks to Pomaika‘i Brown, our Volunteer and Homeowner Engagement Coordinator, neighborhood events like next months Halloween block party are on the rise. It’s important to us at Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity that we build more than just houses, we build communities where families can grow and thrive.

Welcome Vijay!!

This year we are fortunate enough to have four AmeriCorps volunteers serving their 10 1/2 months of service with Kaua‘i Habitat.  AmeriCorps is a program that engages adults in public service work that helps meet the critical needs in the community, and our fourth generous volunteer has arrived on island. Vijay began volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plainfield & Middlesex County in New Jersey. Having enjoyed that experience he jumped at the chance to serve a 10 1/2 month term with Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity and is looking forward to his time as an AmeriCorps member. Welcome Vijay! We are thrilled that you will be building homes and hope with us on Kaua‘i.
