`Ele`ele Iluna Update

DSCN1758Follow the newly paved road! Yes, infrastructure work is coming close to completion. This week the roads through the subdivision were paved leading the way to the lots of the next 30 homes in the subdivision. Of all the work we do, this project creates the most affordable homes for Kaua‘i families in the least amount of time. Currently, we are the only affiliate in the islands working to combat the affordable housing crisis through subdivision development.

World Habitat Day!

WHD14-share-PinterestWorld Habitat Day is October 6th, 2014! On this day we strive to raise awareness of the current global housing crisis. Currently, 1.6 billion people live in inadequate shelter around the world. More than 100 million people worldwide are homeless. Join Habitat for Humanity as we call for programs, policies and systems that would lead to a world where everyone has a decent place to live. For more information or to sign a petition to make shelter a priority visit habitat.org/whd

Volunteer Spotlight

story_volunteerWhile we normally focus our volunteer spotlight on one of the many dedicated volunteers that work along side us here at Kaua‘i Habitat, sometimes it’s important to take a look at what other’s are doing at other affiliates. For instance, Don Baker of Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Peoria Area began building in 1989 and has personally worked on every one of the 100 homes built there. Read more of his story as it was featured in Habitat World Magazine.

Neighborhood Revitalization Works

Habitat WorldPlease enjoy this great article in Habitat World magazine about how a community came together to transform a neighborhood and those who live in it. It’s a great look at how Habitat for Humanity’s homebuilding efforts partnered with residents and other organizations can have a huge impact. Let this story by Ann Hardie, with photos by Ezra Millstein, inspire you to support the work Habitat does building homes and hope in communities worldwide.

A Family That Builds Together

FamilyA family that builds together, stays together! While normally true that’s not exactly the case in this instance. You may have heard we recently welcomed Rita Klofta as an AmeriCorps appointee. Well her parents Tom and Jackie visited the island to help her get settled and while they were here they joined us on a job site. So while the family had the opportunity to build together, I’m afraid they won’t be able to stay together as we plan on holding on to Rita for at least the next 10 1/2 months.
