It was a picture perfect Hawaiian evening as we prepared to send off our wonderful volunteers with a big Mahalo! As grateful homeowners entertained our guest with sounds of ukulele and visions of hula dancing the sun began to set on the ten day adventure for the members of Global Village Canada Team LeSage. The team spent most of their time here sweating in the Kekaha sun working on the future home of Nelson and Marian Eguchi. So it was nice to take some time to enjoy the views and a great meal at Salt Pond Park as a way to express our gratitude. Our guest were treated to gifts and entertainment from Kaua‘i Habitat homeowners and staff, but there wasn’t a dry eye in the place when the team presented their own token of appreciation to Marian Eguchi. The team had framed a Canadian Hockey Stick with all of their well wishes using framing techniques many had learned on the job site. The appreciation on Marian’s face was truly touching.
We were happy to present Monica Texeira with the Youth Volunteer Service Award. Monica earned this award through her hard work and commitment to the community by volunteering with the Kaua‘i Habitat ReStore®. Mahalo Monica! You deserve it!
The past couple of weeks we have been fortunate enough to have a Global Village Team volunteering here at Kaua‘i Habitat. We’re always interested in what motivates these volunteers to spend their free time helping others in need. Well for Daniel and Laura it was a way to celebrate 25 years together! As part of their 25th anniversary this generous couple gave to our island as well as to each other. We always love to celebrate the kindness of people like this.
We were delighted to be entertained by Kaua‘i Habitat supporter and volunteer Cynthia Chiang at last weekends Bon Dance in Koloa! She and the rest of the Taiko Drummers were amazing to watch! The Bon Dance season is almost over, so if you haven’t made it to one yet you have just a couple weekends left.

This past week we had more than twenty volunteers (mainly teenagers) from around the world volunteering at the Kaua‘i Habitat ReStore®! The teenagers are part of a travel group organized by West Coast Connections. The tour company offers many different types of tours and this group was participating in a tour that has an emphasis on community service. Most of the volunteers came to us from the United States and Canada, however, some were from as far as Spain.
We all know that Hawaii is a beautiful place to spend your honeymoon. People have been enjoying the crystal blue waters and breathtaking sunsets for some time. It’s amazing that these two honeymooners were able to pull themselves away from all the beauty to help others in need, but that’s exactly what Dinnis and Cynthia King of Maryland did. We here at Kaua‘i Habitat wish Dinnis and Cynthia a wonderful life together! It’s so great to see them start their marriage with such kindness and generosity! Congratulations Dinnis and Cynthia!!
The future home of Nelson and Marian Eguchi continues to make progress as volunteers from a Global Village team work on the home while visiting from Canada. The team spent this week painting the interior walls and exterior trim of the home. As always the Eguchi family is wonderful at sharing the aloha spirit and making the visitors feel welcome! Dennis Fujimoto from The Garden Island newspaper even stopped by to interview the Global Village team and take some pictures. You can read his article here. It’s always great to see people come together to do great things here on Kaua‘i.
