August 20, 2013 – Hanapēpē, Hawai‘i – On August 15 and 16, U.S. Navy service members from the Pacific Missile Range Facility gave Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore® a much needed facelift. The exterior work conducted by the volunteer crews on August 15 and 16 included painting the building exterior and installing soffit boards. The 2-day project was part of an ongoing ReStore® improvement and capacity building project.
PMRF Commanding Officer Capt. Bruce W. Hay stated that he is “proud of the PMRF team and their volunteer spirit.” Captain Hay looks forward to future opportunities to again assist our neighbors in the community through volunteer work with Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity. The Day 1 crew included 11 Navy personnel and 2 civilians led by Capt. Bruce Hay, PMRF Executive Officer Cmdr. Garron Morris, and Senior Chief Rolen Jiao. The Day 2 crew consisted of a Seabee unit (Underwater Construction Team 2) of 14 members and 1 visiting spouse, led by Chief Construction Electrician Adam Winters and Construction Mechanic 1st Class James Richardson. Originally based at Port Hueneme, California, UCT 2 will move on to serve at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in September to conduct fleet mooring inspections and maintenance.
“Habitat welcomes volunteers of all skill levels and abilities. It’s been a great treat for us over the past two days to have a positive crew who not only has enthusiasm for the tasks at hand, but also the professional skills to get the job done safely, quickly, efficiently in a matter of days,” said Stephen Spears, Kaua‘i Habitat executive director. “We are grateful to Capt. Hay, PMRF, and the U.S. Navy for all their hard work and efforts.”
ReStore® Manager Cynthia Dazzi explained that “ReStore is Kaua‘i Habitat’s resale outlet for new and used clothing, furniture, home improvement items, and more. All goods are donated to Kaua‘i Habitat and every penny raised from store purchases goes right back into funding our work of creating affordable housing opportunities for Kaua‘i.” Dazzi also noted, “Getting the exterior of our building done has capped off a year-long effort to improve the shopping experience for our customers. We hope to bring a new point-of-sale system online soon and hold a grand re-opening sale in the near future.”
Recent improvements to ReStore® include: reorganization of sales floor, improved quality of merchandise, increased home improvement goods and building materials inventory, staff training, and addition of a point-of-sale system. Funding for the ReStore® capacity building project was made possible in part from a grant from Hawai‘i Community Foundation.
