Kauai Board of REALTORS pledges $100,000 American Dream Home Sponsorship

Kaua‘i Board of REALTORS® pledges $100,000 American Dream Sponsorship of a home in Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision

Līhu‘e, Hawai‘i – Donna Rice, President of the Kauai Board of REALTORS®, announced today at their General Membership Meeting that the Board will pledge $100,000 over the next six months to Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity for sponsorship at the American Dream Sponsor level of a home in Phase 2 of the ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision project.

The Kauai Board of REALTORS® (KBR) has been a strong supporter of affordable home builder Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity (KHFH) over the years. Last year, Past President Matt Beall (Hawaii Life Real Estate), Ron Margolis (Hawaii Life Real Estate), Steve Latham (Kauai Dream Homes), and Justin Thain (Puuwai Design & Construction) formed a committee to rally support and challenge other KBR members to raise funds and swing hammers at Habitat’s Build-A-Thon in August. Over 50 members and affiliate members of KBR, friends, and volunteers came together with a combined 400+ hours of labor to give a “hand up” to three Habitat partner families in Anahola and $8,500 in contributions were raised in support of Habitat’s ongoing work.

This year, KBR’s efforts to help make more affordable homes available to the community are continued by the 2013 KBR/Habitat sub-committee: Steve Latham (Kauai Dream Homes), Darcy McCartney (McCartney Properties), and Fran McDonald (Coldwell Banker Makai Properties). On April 24, the sub-committee organized a special Caravan of homes which showcased at its last stop one of the recently completed Habitat homes the Realtors helped to construct.

The homes that KBR helped begin were officially completed and dedicated at a formal later the same day. KBR members were in attendance to celebrate a wonderful accomplishment with Habitat and the three homeowner families. It was at that event that Donna Rice (Century 21 All Islands), Matt Beall (Hawaii Life Real Estate), and Rick Shaw (Coldwell Banker Makai Properties) discussed the status of Habitat’s ‘Ele‘ele Iluna subdivision with Executive Director Stephen Spears. After learning that the cost to build an affordable home in that subdivision was $100,000, Rice, Beall, and Shaw shook hands with Spears and began laying out a plan of action to raise $100,000 from member brokerages of Kauai Board of REALTORS®.

On June 26, the Kaua‘i County Council presented the Kauai Board of REALTORS® with a certificate sponsored by Councilmember Nadine Nakamura to honor the outstanding partnership between the Board of REALTORS® and Kaua‘i Habitat.

“We are proud to help further the important work of Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity. Our goal is to raise the $100,000 over the next six months,” said Rice. “We hope this will serve as an example to other organizations that there are strength in numbers, and together we can make great things happen for those in need in our community.”

Spears said, “Our partner families work so hard to build up their lives and construct their homes. Our homeowners, Board, and staff are grateful to have the friendship, wise counsel, and support of Kauai Board of REALTORS®. We are thrilled to have them on board as an American Dream Sponsor, which is the top level of our House Sponsorship program.”

About Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity

Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical, nonprofit, Christian housing ministry. Its mission is to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world – one house at a time on Kaua‘i – and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Through volunteer and homeowner labor, and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses.

Kaua‘i Habitat features two main home building programs: New Home Construction Program and Repair and Renovation Program. Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity also operates ReStore®, which sells new and used discounted building and construction materials and household items. Proceeds from ReStore® support Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s mission to build decent, affordable housing. Since 1992 Kaua‘i Habitat has built 108 affordable homes and made critical repairs to 19 existing homes for Kaua‘i families whose household income is between 30-80% of the median Kaua`i income. Because the critical need for affordable housing continues to persist on our island, Kaua`i Habitat has pledged to scale up our capacity and build our next 100 homes before the next decade.
